We
specializes in the research, validation, and registration of personal,
family, and organizational arms. On this page, we explain what goes
into this often arduous research.
The
phenomenon of arms transmitted from generation to generation based on
the family name of the bearer dates back to the middle ages. Even in
those early days, the custom was a democratic one: even though the
wearing of arms started with the ecclesiastic orders, it soon (early
13th century) spread to the "middle classes", which back then, meant
artisans and laborers.
Research
We
maintain a library that repertory over 300.000 individual blazons. Over
and above the indispensable European Armorial of J.B. Rietstap, the
Universal Armorial of Jouffroy d'Eschavannes, the Burke's General
Armory, the "Armorial de d'Hozier" (1696 edition), Jougla de Morenas's
Grand Armorial of France,, (and more...) we are the proud possessors of
several private archives.
My
associates and myself are quite confident that we can respond to any
question concerning heraldic research.
Personalization
In
order to avoid unfortunate "double-use" (more than one person wearing
the same coat of arms), we incorporate (once the arms have been found),
minor modifications in the design. This can be a change of color,
addition of an honorable ordinary, or other items. This practice is
traditional: the younger members of a family always modified the arms
of the head of the family or the title bearer.
Canting Arms
Whenever
an archival research is unsuccessful, we can create, in accordance with
common practice, "canting", or allusive arms. These translate the
emblematic meaning of your family name into heraldic language, using
appropriate etymology and symbolism.
It is
also possible, upon request, to create totally original coats of arms
based on personal or family details
Registration
Be
they historical or allusive, your arms, to be valid and recognized,
must be registeredin an Armorial. All of the arms we produce are
published annually in the Armorial de France et d'Europe and
registered with the French Ministry of the Interior and the French
National Library. This registration guarantees your full ownership of
your arms, meaning they can be handed down over the generations.
